Vastu is often presented as a set of rigid rules. In traditional practice it is closer to a set of considerations about direction, light, order and use of space.
What Vastu considers
- Orientation of the building and the main entrance
- Placement of the kitchen, sleeping areas and study or work space
- Direction of the household shrine or prayer corner
- Light, ventilation, storage and general order
How a review is carried out
For most homes and shops, a plan, rough sketch or set of photographs is enough to begin. The discussion covers how the space is actually used, where difficulties are being felt, and which traditional considerations apply. Suggestions are then given in order of simplicity.
Why demolition is rarely the first answer
Traditional guidance recognises that most families cannot rebuild. The majority of practical suggestions involve rearranging furniture, changing which room is used for what, improving light and air, keeping certain areas clean and uncluttered, or shifting the prayer corner. Structural change is a last consideration, not a starting point.
Be cautious of anyone who insists on expensive construction or costly objects as the only remedy.
